Melaleuca trees have evolved with nature over millions of years. For thousands of those years the first Australians burnt off much of the land to promote more grass to encourage their food animals to move into an area. During this process trees would be charred there by removing the excess dead bark. However, we now do not encourage fires in our urban areas so the excess bark is allowed to build up, giving rise to an increase of insect life in the bark which left unchecked can kill a tree. So by removing the bark that has started to peel you can help the tree by allowing birds, lizards etc access to the insect population hiding there. We recommend only removing an A4 size piece of bark no thicker than comes away easily. Remember you will not be the only person collecting bark and one piece at a time is usually surfactant for your colour needs.
